Rooted in Midwest Rock, The Elms continues making to embrace the melodic rock of the 90’s with an ineffable power. The first time I heard these guys was back in 2001 with the wonderful singles “Hey, Hey” and “Speaking In Tongues”. After a musical break, “The Great American Midrange” takes us back a dynamic and brilliant return of The Elms, with songs full of spirituality, solid guitar riffs and resounding rhythms united in their fourth studio album. Produced and recorded by Brent Milligan (tobyMac, Back Street Boys, Michael W. Smith) in Warner Bros. Studios, heavily influenced by The Band, The Heartbreakers and The Rolling Stones, who give tribute to the rock of the past while adopting modern and creative arrangements.

There’s no better way to start the records, than with “Strut”. Explosive, almost primitive song. Owent Thomas (vocals) bring us bad news and scatters with a ruthless remedy in the first verse: “I walk out and stand in my front yard / It’s plain to see that the times are hard / What’s a man to do when he’s had enough? / You put on your boots and you strut your stuff / Come on, strut your stuff”. The merciless drums of Christopher Thomas, reinforced by the strident bass from Nathan W. Bennet, while the boisterous riff of Thomas Daugherty (guitar) enchanting us with a crunchy boogie-blues-rock song. “Unless God Appears First” tells personal imperfections without the need to apologize for them: “Unless God appears first, I will die this way”, following the footsteps of bands like The Black Crowes. Wrapping a simple pop sensibility, but huge arrangements, “County Fair” tells the simple pleasures of life in an ode to innocence and hope. The deep midtempo tune of “The Wildest Heart” breaks into your head like a romantic thought: “A rolling cloud surrounded in blue”, celebrating the quiet, invisible moments of life. “Long Gone” brings hope in phrases such as “Down in the vally rock / with the mud and bone / When all is dry and dead / Sometimes you find a little hope”. Clearly infected with a blues spirit, “Shake” ruffles us with its infectious riff to “RU Gonna Be My Girl” by the crazy Jet. Songs like “Good Guys” reflect the heart of the album, a tribute to the unsung heroes of America: “It’s a long road for the good guys / It’s a long road for the simple man”. The vocal work of Owen Thomas is even versatile in “The Little Ways”, a ballad tinged with falsetto, overly emotional talking about a love separated by distance, and that little hope to someday meet each other. The first single from the album appears with “Back To Indiana” (FREE DOWNLOAD), which was added to radio on August 4 after being premiered on ABC and ESPN with a great host. This pop song full of hope, embraces his sensitivity on each chord: “Bring a chair up to the table / Bring a message to the crowd / Where’s a common trust to deliver us from the wretched and the proud? / Sing a tune about the promise. / Speak on That Which we depend. / If A Certain light do not shine again, baby, this is how the world will end”, says “This Is How The World Will End”, which begins as an acoustic ballad, but gradually grows into a rock’n’roll masterpiece. Keeping the same lyric layout, “Thunderhead” talks about protect our loved ones from the dangers of life. While it gives us a cross section of life in troubled times, do not hesitate to proclaim a strong dose of hope: “Hold me close and steady, do not lose heart / when the rest go running, I’ll not depart / We will find that well of hope within / When the thunderhead comes rolling in “. We can sense the air of Needtobreathe, DecembeRadio and the band’s musical peculiarity in “A Place In The Sun”, one of the most vulnerable tracks that unveils the sentiments of a working man: “I sit in the willows, my hat on my knee. / There’s a man in my shoes where a boy used to be. / I’m wore-out and weary, but before my time’s done I need to find me a place in the sun”.

No matter where you live, at the north or south, “The Great American Midrange” can become the soundtrack of your life. This album is the voice of all mankind, screaming hope, perspectives, safety, certainty and above all rock’n’roll. This disc is a real classic.

Arraigados en el rock de medioeste, The Elms sigue logrando abrazar el rock melódico de los 90’s con una energía inefable. La primera vez que oí a estos muchachos fue allá por el 2001 con los maravillosos sencillos “Hey, Hey” y “Speaking In Tongues”. Luego de todo un receso musical, “The Great American Midrange” nos devuelve el dinamismo y el brillante retorno de The Elms, con canciones llenas de espiritualidad, sólidos riffs de guitarras y resonantes ritmos se unen en su cuarto álbum de estudio. Producido y grabado por Brent Milligan (tobyMac, Back Street Boys, Michael W. Smith) en los estudios de Warner Bros. Fuertes influencias de The Band, The Heartbreakers y The Rolling Stones, que dan tributo al rock del pasado mientras que adoptan modernos y creativos arreglos.

El álbum no puede empezar mejor que con “Strut”; explosiva, casi primitiva. Owent Thomas (vocalista) nos traer malas noticias y las disipa con un implacable remedio en el primer verso: “Salgo a caminar y me paro en el patio / Es fácil ver que los tiempos son duros / ¿Qué es lo que tiene que hacer un hombre cuando ha tenido suficiente? / Te pones las botas y contorneas tus cosas / Vamos contorneas tus cosas”. La inclemente batería de parte de Christopher Tomas (baterista), reforzada por el estridente bajo de Nathan W. Bennet (bajista), mientras que el bullicioso riff de Thomas Daugherty (guitarrista) nos encanta con un crujiente boogie-blues-rock. “Unless God Appears First” nos cuenta imperfecciones personales sin la necesidad de pedir disculpas por ellas: “Unless God appears first, I will die this way”, siguiendo los pasos de bandas como The Black Crowes. Envolviéndose de una sensibilidad pop con simples, pero enormes arreglos, “County Fair” narra los placeres sencillos de la vida en una oda a la inocencia y la esperanza. La profunda melodía midtempo de “The Wildest Heart” se irrumpe en tu cabeza como un pensamiento romántico: “Una nube ondulada rodeada de color azul”, celebrando la quietud, los momentos invisibles de la vida. “Long Gone” nos trae esperanza en frases como: “Abajo en el valle rocoso con el barro y el barro / Cuando todo está seco y muerto, a veces encuentras un poco de esperanza”. Netamente infectados de un espíritu blues, “Shake” nos sacude con su contagioso riff a lo “R U Gonna Be My Girl” de los desquiciados Jet. Canciones como “Good Guys” reflejan el corazón del disco, un homenaje a los héroes anónimos de América: “Es un largo camino para los buenos muchachos / Es un largo camino para el hombre inocente”. El trabajo vocal de Owen Thomas es incluso versátil incluso en “The Little Ways”, una balada matizada con falsetes, completamente emocional hablando sobre amores separados por la distancia, y de aquella pequeña esperanza de algún día encontrarse. El primer sencillo del álbum aparece con “Back To Indiana” (FREE DOWNLOAD), que se añadió a la radio el pasado 4 de agosto, luego de ser estrenado en la ABC y ESPN con gran acogida. Este himno pop lleno de esperanza, abraza su sensibilidad en cada acorde: “Traie una silla a la mesa / Trae un mensaje a la multitud / ¿Dónde estpa la confianza compun que nos libra de los miserables y los soberbios? / Canta una canción sobre la promesa / Habña sobre lo que dependemos / Si una  certera luz no brilla otra vez, nena así es como el mundo terminará”, nos dice “This Is How The World Will End”, que empieza como una balada acústica, pero poco a poco crece en una obra maestra de rock’n’roll. Manteniendo el mismo esquema lírico, “Thunderhead” habla sobre proteger a nuestros seres queridos de los peligros de la vida. Si bien nos dan una visión transversal de la vida en tiempos difíciles, no dudan en pregonar una fuerte dosis de esperanza: “Sosténme cerca y constantemenre, no pierdas el corazón / cuando el resto sale a correr, yo no huiré. / Nosotros hallaremos también la esperanza / Cuando viene la tormenta viene rodando”. Podemos percibir aires de Needtobreathe, DecembeRadio y la peculiaridad musical de la banda en “A Place In The Sun”, uno de los tracks más vulnerables al develar los sentimientos de un hombre trabajador: “Me siento en los sauces, mi sombrero en la rodilla. / Hay un hombre en mis zapatos donde un niño solía estar / Estoy agotado, cansado, pero antes de que mi tiempo se acabe, necesito encontrarme un lugar en el sol”.

No importa dónde vives, sin el norte o el sur, “The Great American Midrange” puede convertirse en la banda sonora de tu vida. Este álbum es la voz de toda la humanidad, gritando esperanza, perspectivas, seguridad, certidumbre y sobre todo rock’n’roll. Este disco es un todo un clásico.
