Skillet already has nearly 14 years in the music scene, with over 9 successful singles in a remarkable career that continues with the release of “Awake”. The hard rock of this band is unmatched, and thanks to the success that “Comatose” caused them, this new album became a phenomenon in 2009 and of course still continues with this effect in the early 2010. “Awake” is the first experience with Howard Benson, producer known for his work with Daughtry, My Chemical Romance, The All American Rejects, POD, Mae, and so on.

Since the opening of the disc, and since the voice introduction of Jen Ledger (drummer/ female vocals) in their songs, the concept of each track is more interesting. “Hero” is the first single from the album, which features a large-scale electric guitar interlaced with the voice of Jon Cooper showing the desperate need of a hero in our world, a hero who fights injustice and the oppression of our days, a hero like Christ: “Who’s gonna fight for what’s right? / Who’s gonna help us survive? / We’re in the fight of our lives / And we’re not ready to die / Who’s gonna fight for the weak? / Who’s gonna make ‘em believe? / I’ve got a hero living in me / I’m gonna fight for what’s right / Today I’m speaking my mind / And if it kills me tonight / I will be ready to die”. The second single “Monster”, compares the monster within us to sin that invades us, showing the dark side we need to get out. With powerful guitars, a brilliant vocal performance, melodies similarities to Linkin Park and an angry growl that distorts man’s internal struggle between good and evil: “I feel it deep within / It’s just beneath the skin / I hate what I’ve become / The nightmare’s just begun / I must confess that I feel like a monster”.  The nuances of unrequited love are reflected in “Don’t Wake Me”, an acoustic ballad with 80’s features. These are the people who lost something, who broke up with someone or who lost someone, and those feelings that give you the impression of being in a dream. “These dreams of you keep on growing stronger / It ain’t a lot but it’s all I have / Nothing to do but keep sleeping longer / Don’t wanna stop cause I want you back”. Soon we arrived at “Awake And Alive”, which leans towards bands like Evanescence or Red, using strident violins at the beginning that recalls the sound of “Comatose” and adds a wild guitar instrumental by Ben Kasica. Sometimes we feel that the world around us try to avert our hope by negative influences, but this song encourages you to live what you believe and not be afraid to defend your faith: “I’m awake I’m alive / Now I know what I believe inside / Now it’s my time / I’ll do what I want ‘cause this is my life / Here, right now I’ll stand my ground and never back down / I know what I believe inside / I’m awake and I’m alive”. The inspirational “One Day Too Late” talks about the decisions we should have taken yesterday, with an introspective message that makes you thinking about the meaning of life. This is to value each second, because tomorrow may be too late: “Your time is running out / You’re never gonna get it back / Make the most of every moment / Stop saving the best for last”. The distorted guitars on “It’s Not Me, It’s You” try to get rid of negative influences in our lives: “Let’s get the story straight / You were a poison / Flooding through my veins / Driving me insane / And now you’re gone away / I’m no longer choking / From the pain you put me through / And now I know that it’s not me it’s you”. We continued with “Should’ve When You Could’ve”, which touches the theme of a breakup from the perspective of a girl. With contagious melodic lines in the chorus, like “Those Nights” and Daughtry songs: “You should’ve when you could’ve / You’re gonna miss my love girl / You should, it would’ve been so good / You should’ve when I would’ve / Now I know I’ve had enough / Better luck next time girl / You should, it would’ve been so good”. Likewise, “Believe” continues the record of a classic rock ballad, with similarities to Incubus, Staind, 3 Doors Down and Seether and sometimes Flyleaf. With an excellent guitar instrumental with 80’s metal features, and an explosive lyrical addressed to each person who had a consistent loving relationship, but in a moment of stupidity, they ruined everything: “If you believed when I said / I’d be better off without you / Then you never really knew me at all / That I wouldn’t be thinking about you / You thought you knew the truth but you’re wrong / You’re all that I need / Just tell me that you still believe”. The song with more Christian context is “Forgiven”, spreading hope, redemption and God ‘s forgiveness through a splendid piano symphony and violins: redención y el perdón de Dios, a través de pianos y una espléndida sinfonía de violines: “Now I’m in our secret place / Alone in your embrace / Where all my wrongs have been erased / All the promises and lies / All the times I compromise / All the times you were denied / You have forgiven”. Next, “Sometimes” brings the darker atmosphere of the album, which is facing dark and sinful areas of our soul, often beating out in this spiritual warfare. Great job on the shrill guitar, showing human nature at its best: “Sometimes I can’t hide the demons that I face / Sometimes don’t deny / I’m sometimes sinner, sometimes saint”. The inspiration behind “Never Surrender” comes from a conversation with a fan of the band about her eating disorder. Many times you do not like who you are, and you wish that someone is crying beside you and encourage you to not surrender, that’s when God appears through a friend or family member: “I don’t wanna feel like this tomorrow / I don’t wanna live like this today / Make me feel better / I wanna feel better / Stay with me here / And never surrender”. The album closes with “Lucy”, a song addressed to a girl named Lucy who passed away, as Cooper demonstrates that both nostalgia moments spent together. A song of regret that you want to turn back the clock and do things differently, but that gives hope to change your life with the help of God, who gives you a second opportunity for you to remember to live and love without regret. The pianos and violins whisper: “Here we are, now you’re in my arms / Here we are for a brand new start / Got to live with the choices I’ve made / And I can’t live with myself today”.

As the first bonus track “Dead Inside”, which talks about a faith full of life and passion, with catchy guitar riffs and a despair lyrical: “I can’t escape this love / I want it the way it was / You remind me of a time / When I felt alive”. The second and more interesting bonus track is “Would It Matter”, which focuses on the thoughts about whether what you do is worthwhile, or if you really care: ““If I live tomorrow / Would anybody care / Stuck in this sorrow / Going nowhere”. These last two tracks plus alternate version of “Monster” (edited by removing the chilling scream in the bridge), make it worth buying the Deluxe Edition.

Some say that “Awake” has failed to overtake its predecessor “Comatose”. At first taste, I also shared the same opinion, however after a dawn listening, I’ve been addicted to this progression and mixed of feelings, sounds and energy captured in a wonderful album. This is how Cooper’s phenomenal vocal maturity coupled with powerful rock ecstatic with a powerful message that is injected into your veins and cause a material change, the old school classic rock is back with “Awake” with monstrous and daring songs who become immortal hymns of this new decade.

Who’s gonna fight for what’s right? / Who’s gonna help us survive? / We’re in the fight of our lives / And we’re not ready to die / Who’s gonna fight for the weak? / Who’s gonna make ‘em believe? / I’ve got a hero living in me / I’m gonna fight for what’s right / Today I’m speaking my mind / And if it kills me tonight / I will be ready to die”. I feel it deep within / It’s just beneath the skin / I hate what I’ve become / The nightmare’s just begun / I must confess that I feel like a monster”. “These dreams of you keep on growing stronger / It ain’t a lot but it’s all I have / Nothing to do but keep sleeping longer / Don’t wanna stop cause I want you back”. I’m awake I’m alive / Now I know what I believe inside / Now it’s my time / I’ll do what I want ‘cause this is my life / Here, right now I’ll stand my ground and never back down / I know what I believe inside / I’m awake and I’m alive”. Your time is running out / You’re never gonna get it back / Make the most of every moment / Stop saving the best for last”. Las distorsionadas guitarras en “It’s Not Me, It’s You” intentan deshacerse de las influencias negativas en nuestras vidas: “Let’s get the story straight / You were a poison / Flooding through my veins / Driving me insane / And now you’re gone away / I’m no longer choking / From the pain you put me through / And now I know that it’s not me it’s you”. Continuamos con “Should’ve When You Could’ve”, que toca el tema de una ruptura amorosa desde la perspectiva de una chica. Con contagiosas líneas melódicas en el coro, similares a “Those Nights” y a Daughtry: “You should’ve when you could’ve / You’re gonna miss my love girl / You should, it would’ve been so good / You should’ve when I would’ve / Now I know I’ve had enough / Better luck next time girl / You should, it would’ve been so good”. If you believed when I said / I’d be better off without you / Then you never really knew me at all / That I wouldn’t be thinking about you / You thought you knew the truth but you’re wrong / You’re all that I need / Just tell me that you still believe”. La canción con mayor contexto cristiano es “Forgiven”, esparciendo esperanza, redención y el perdón de Dios, a través de pianos y una espléndida sinfonía de violines: “Now I’m in our secret place / Alone in your embrace / Where all my wrongs have been erased / All the promises and lies / All the times I compromise / All the times you were denied / You have forgiven”. I can’t hide the demons that I face / Sometimes don’t deny / I’m sometimes sinner, sometimes saint”. I don’t wanna feel like this tomorrow / I don’t wanna live like this today / Make me feel better / I wanna feel better / Stay with me here / And never surrender”. Los pianos y violines susurran: “Here we are, now you’re in my arms / Here we are for a brand new start / Got to live with the choices I’ve made / And I can’t live with myself today”.

I can’t escape this love / I want it the way it was / You remind me of a time / When I felt alive”. If I live tomorrow / Would anybody care / Stuck in this sorrow / Going nowhere”.

Bethany Dillon - Stop & Listen

Artist: Bethany Dillon
Album: Stop & Listen
Year: 2009
Label: Sparrow Records/EMI CMG

The fifth album from Bethany Dillon reflects the musical growth, and her faith, love and passion. ‘Stop & Listen’ is a compilation of the heart through sweet melodies and songs of worship that recorded a spiritual development. Colored by delicate acoustic guitars and slightly dragged by a slow rhythm that gives a message full of experiences and lessons. Produced by Marshall Altman (Brooke Fraser, Warren Barfield, Matt Wertz), it carry the work of this woman to a new level, both lyrically and musically.

“Get Up And Walk” introduces Bethany in the same category of Sarah McLachlan by warm vocals, an addictive rhythm that weaves a powerful spiritual message about the life-giving work of Christ. It’s a song inspired by stories of healing of the New Testament, and reminds us that God is still restoring the broken, while encouraging you to overcome our weaknesses and walk into the light: “You break through my deafness / Swing open the curtain and I find the courage to get up and walk / I forget my weakness / For you’ve answered my loneliness / And through the mud on my eyes / I can see my hope has come”. Then, we find “Everyone To Know”, the first single from the album written with Ed Cash, and it has a powerful feeling that encourages our silenced hearts to recognize that the love of God is the only salvation and we must take our testimony as a command that will bring life to our world: “To all of those who are searching / Come find what you seek / It is the Truth that we all / Truth that we all need”. Based on the story of Hosea and the challenge of being faithful in difficult circumstances, with one of the best vocal performances, emotional, interspersed with some maturity that resembles Colbie Caillat and whispers: “You have called me out of shadows / Out of darkness into light / Hemmed in by the hands of mercy / I’m completely satisfied”. Co-written with Ben Glover and Joy Williams, the song “Stop & Listen” refers to Martha and Mary of the Bible. While Martha was busy for chores, Mary would rather be at the feet of Jesus and listening; often rewards come in moments of meditation and devotion. Must exist in us the need to stop and take a time in our troubled schedule. Stop and listen to the sublime voice of God: “But I’d be a fool to forfeit / The chance to take a moment / For you to rise like the dawn / Over my cold, tired heart / What I thought I had lost / Finds me when I stop / Stop and listen”. The struggle we have to balance in our lifes between God and our marriage is shown in “Say Your Name”. No matter how much our lifestyles change, God is the same and yet we can know him: “Still I reach for you / When I am afraid / And this breath that comes from you helps me say your name”. Continuing the theme of taking time to be closer to God, “So Close” unifies a wonderful, simple instrumentation that recalls the early work of Bethany. Attempts to resolve the distance between the pilgrims of our pride and God are embodied in the following lines: “Still, I’m so close to being so far away from you / Though I know no one on their own makes it through / My soul clings to the dust / So in your life, let it be enough”. The image of a woman, who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was healed by faith, is told in “Reach Out” which ends with: “I feel like something has changed”. Confessions of insecurity, pride and lack of love are summarized in a prayer called “Deliver Me” with phrases such sincere and profound: “Deliver me from my hateful thoughts / I’m Committing murder in the Presence of God / Break my heart just like David’s was / With a weeping, pregnant widow in my house / How can I despise my brother / When I killed your only begotten son?”. Fogging of with acoustic guitars, “The Way I Come To You” talks about how Jesus took our sin and set us free by the wonderful gift of forgiveness and the eternal freedom we now have through him: “You drank the cup that was all filled  up / With my punishment and shame / From the garden to the empty tomb / The way I come to You forever changed “. Almost finishing the album and inspired by Isaiah 55, “In The Beginning” is a poem full of depth where we can appreciate the wonderful work of Bethany in the composition. Finally, the acoustic version of “Everyone To Know” gives the final touch to the album, with the help of Shane Barnard (Bethany’s husband), playing perfect harmonies and culminating this unforgettable spiritual serenade.

The only purpose in ‘Stop & Listen’ is to show the heart of a passionate woman of God. Sticky pop that uses guitars and soft voices whispering beside a simple and penetrating lyrical. If you like the work of Meredith Andrews, Ginny Owens, Nichole Nordeman and above Colbie Caillat, no doubt that Bethany Dillon has enough features to be your next partner on an autumn afternoon.

You break through my deafness / Swing open the curtain and I find the courage to get up and walk / I forget my weakness / For you’ve answered my loneliness / And through the mud on my eyes / I can see my hope has come”. To all of those who are searching / Come find what you seek  / It is the Truth that we all need”. You have called me out of shadows / Out of darkness into light / Hemmed in by the hands of mercy / I’m completely satisfied”. Detenernos y escuchar la sublime voz de Dios: “But I’d be a fool to forfeit  / The chance to take a moment / For you to rise like the dawn / Over my cold, tired heart / What I thought I had lost / Finds me when I stop / Stop and listen”. No importa cuánto cambien nuestros estilos de vida, Dios es el mismo y todavía podemos conocerle: “Still I reach for you / When I am afraid / And this breath that comes from you helps me say your name”. Still, I’m so close to being so far away from you / Though I know no one on their own makes it through / My soul clings to the dust / So in your life, let it be enough”. I feel like something has changed”. Confesiones sobre inseguridad, orgullo y falta de amor se resumen en una oración llamada “Deliver Me” con frases tan sinceras como profundas: “Deliver me from my hateful thoughts / I’m committing murder in the presence of God / Break my heart just like David’s was / With a weeping, pregnant widow in my house / How can I despise my brother / When I killed your only begotten son?”. Empañado  de guitarras acústicas, “The Way I Come To You” habla de cómo Jesús tomó nuestros pecados y nos hizo libres con el maravilloso regalo del perdón, y ahora tenemos libertad eterna a través de él: “You drank the cup that was all filled up / With my punishment and shame / From the garden to the empty tomb / The way I come to You forever changed”.

Manic Drive - Blue

Artist:
Manic Drive
Album: Blue
Year: 2009
Label: Whiplash Records/BEMA

Manic Drive’s return to the music scene is causing a stir. The canadian trio formed by Shawn Cavallo (vocals, guitars, keyboards, string programming), Anthony Moreino (drums) and Michael Cavallo (lead guitar) has just released his new album “Blue”, after the success brought by his two previous projects (“Reason For Motion” and “Reset & Rewind”) which showed the caliber of expertise that only succeed the veteran rockers. “Blue” was produced by Brian Hardin, Lu Rubino and Shawn Caballo and has resulted in a pop/rock sound rooted in electronic, dance, rap and progressive rock. Influences compared to Shiny Toy Guns, Newsboys, Kevin Max and of course dcTalk, gives us depth and musicianship skill in each of his songs.

After a synthesized violin intro, “Music” is transformed into a fun rhythm that challenges us to be radical and active, combining techno/dance rock decorated with funky bass slaps and piano fused with the powerful drums. “Walls” reminds us of Family Force 5, but using a euro-pop sound with a loud and clear message: “Cause the truth that has been said, will unite us once again / cause there’s something going down, and these walls are coming down”. The first single from the album, “Blue” makes its way with its deafening beat, with the talent featuring of Lu Rubino (StorySide: B), with attribution of Red Hot Chili Peppers and a wonderful concept in his lyrics that he does remind us not to be followers of others, but being a leader of the Christian message: “That I can’t do this on my own. / Changed my will to yours. / Since I’ve been proven wrong again. / Rear my gray clouds and let my skis go to blue”. Moreover, “Closer” delivers passionate worship with the help of pianos, guitars and vocals as compelling: “We turn around and we curse His name / They convince us that our God is dead / And it’s our fault that we lost Him / So show us that we need you / Even if it makes us cry”. With aggressive guitars and a wild performance, “NYC Gangsters” speaks of new beginnings and the farewell of the past:  “Follow me, my misfits and leave this world behind / As we ride like New York City gangsters / Lighting it up as we drop the bomb”. The explosive “Dancefloor” contributes to the appearance of rapper M.O.C., starting with an acoustic guitar and burst into a dance/metal party completely unhinged. Included in the previous album, the bleak “Eleven Regrets” reflects a frustrating reality. “When you find that special person in your life, you would like to give everything” says Shawn, “guys tend to try to show their affection with a dozen roses. This is where the metaphor comes and explains the frustrations that go through when you have nothing more to give”. We could say that “Rain” is clearly the weakest song of the album (compared to their peers), however it is a nevertheless ballad that encourages us to reach God, obeying him and calling for his intervention in our lives: “Pouring rain, feel your love flowing right through me, through the tears and pain / The earth shakes as it storms. / Pouring rain, let your grace cover completely, flood this selfishness and make it yours again”. We can also find Jill Parr’s participation in “Hope”, a passionate story of creative desperation chords and contrasted with phrases like: “Believe it or not there’s hope based on the truth. / Ignorance is no excuse, there is hope”. Making its own way with “Better Man” with a catchy musical ensemble asking us who owns our hearts. Since we are in those  days, “December Mourning” gives us a melodious history of grief at Christmas, using interesting arrangements taken from “Carol Of The Bells”. Finally, “Change” quickly closes the disc with a dark atmosphere, almost melancholy: “Cause I still miss you, I can’t grieve without you. / My world needs to change”.

Blue” offers good music, profound messages and pushes the band to capture the consciousness of their fans by opening doors to their ministry. Manic Drive has the ability to synchronize multiple musical genres with an innate talent of thousand voices proclaiming the gospel.

“Walls” nos hace recordar a Family Force 5, pero utilizando un estrepitoso sonido euro-pop y con un mensaje claro: “Cause the truth that has been said, will unite us once again / cause there’s something going down, ya these walls are coming down”. That I can’t do this on my own. / Changed my will to yours. / Since I’ve been proven wrong again. / Rear my grey clouds and let my skies go to blue”. Por otro lado, “Closer” nos brinda adoración apasionada con la ayuda de pianos, guitarras y convincentes coros como: “We turn around and we curse His name/ They convince us that our God is dead/ And it’s our fault that we lost Him/ So show us that we need You/ Even if it makes us cry”. Con agresivas guitarras y una salvaje performance, “NYC Gangsters” nos habla de nuevos comienzos y la despedida del pasado: “Follow me, my misfits and leave this world behind /As we ride like New York City gangsters/ Lighting it up as we drop the bomb”. / Pouring rain, let your grace cover completely, flood this selfishness and make it yours again”. También podemos encontrar la participación de Jill Parr en “Hope”, una apasionada historia de desesperación contrastada con creativos acordes y frases como: ”Believe it or not there’s hope based on the truth. / Ignorance is no excuse, there is hope”. Finalmente, “Change” rápidamente cierra el disco con una atmósfera oscura, casi melancólica: “Cause I still miss you, I can’t grieve without you. / My world needs to change”.

John Reuben - Sex, Drugs and Self-Control

image

Artist: John Reuben
Album: Sex, Drugs and Self-Control
Year: 2009
Label: Gotee Records
Website: http://www.myspace.com/johnreuben
Buy:
Pre-Order

John Reuben has prepared a Christmas gift for his fans with the release of his new project “Sex, Drugs and Self-Control”. Merit the title of the first ‘white’ Christian rapper, Reuben states: “This album is full of many questions that I have been struggling with over the past few years. It felt often like there was a tension. Artistry, career and faith felt like they were standing at odds with one another. Sex, Drugs and Self-Control is really about basic questions. Questions like ‘Am I talking about honesty more than I’m actually being honest?’ Everything seems to come back to these questions and trying to understand how art and faith can work together”.

“Jamboree”
opens the album with a pace rhythmic tune, telling us the vicissitudes of work as a full-time musician where the expectation, humility, fear and pride are the protagonists: “Wish it was as easy to keep the faith / willing to say God will make way / but it’s a dangerous place to get paid to motivate”. A DJ voice catches us at the beginning of “Radio Makes You Lonely”, continuing the message of the project using pianos, and sounding sentences referring to the pop culture of our times and his songs full of vilification that make us feel separate, isolated and alone. The ‘video game’ sound that “Burn It Down” has is hilarious, and shares the stages of life, and that we don’t have to be afraid when we stumble, but go ahead and start again, obedience to God defines our strength in him. “In The Air” resonates with a captivating melody and lyrics like: “Something’s in the air tonight / I was on the set making plans, calling friends / Are you all alone when the world catches up? / It’ll be too late. Hey now look out”. It’s hard to have hope when the world is so adverse, however if we look inside with much more patience, we could find hope and the possibility of relating to God. The funny lyrics and the beat of “Paranoid Schizophrenic Apocalyptic Kitten Whisper” are simply indescribable and totally sincere. Jesus walked with people who did not smell good, dirty, and ‘not sophisticated’ ones and it went much further than a passing trend, marked the lives of many people and this should be our daily task, however difficult and uncomfortable that could be. With respect to “Town Folk”, Reuben shares us: “This song sums up many years of my life. I had the opportunity to play with a variety of people from the megachurch in the suburbs to a festival of Apple in the Midwest. This song only mocks random places where I’ve been playing and it makes me appreciate and embrace the opportunities God has given me”. If you have not had the opportunity to see the video of this song I encourage you to open a new tab on Youtube and check it, they will find funny seeing as the biblical stories of Samson, Daniel or Elijah. Quickly “Confident” talks about the anxiety that society is undergoing, and how our personality can change their minds often, and with a seductive musical pattern makes this song one of the most important at adding a female vocalist. On the other hand “Everett” seems taken from the soundtrack of a movie gang, but actually talks about ‘Everett’, a friend of the singer. “My friend Everett, he told me do not trust a man that cannot be at the bottom of a joke” says one of the lines of the chorus, often the struggle of artists is to live in their own way and depending on the views the other, forgetting we often forget to laugh at ourselves. “No Be Nah” is another great song. A loud and infectious beat, telling us about people pledge loyalty to extreme, “I spent a lot of time studying the book of Ecclesiastes, and verse after verse exhorts us to control our language, being aware of our words and be wise to speak. Life is difficult and fraught with a lot of opinions”. The charm of the pizzicato in the intro of “So Sexy For All The Right Reasons” is tinged with his message, a song about the wife of Reuben which began with the idea of being a country song, but thanks to the producer was humorous and endearing: “God she’s beautiful right on time / If the feeling’sMutual’ll redefine / Oh yeah, we can get going. Oh yeah take me away / Oh my pretty woman, perhaps maybe someday”. Constant whistling snatches away the attention on “Whistle Wooden Man”, which is the story of an old man full of anger, resentment and bitterness at having abandoned his son years ago, the melody of the chorus is seductive and deep. “Joyful Noise” is inclined towards a r slow rock/pop incredibly relaxing, expressing ourselves the wrestling with our faith, discipline and obedience. The Bible tells us that every time you have to be joyful, and sometimes we just have to make a conscious choice to be happy.

While this album is much more moderate than some previous ones, still have a solid sound. If you’re dying to hear this album and can’t wait any longer, there are 4 songs available on iTunes (Town Folk Jamboree, Confident and No Be Nah) that will leave you more anxious for the arrival of 22 December (the release date of Sex, Drugs and Self-Control). This is the year of Gotee Records, and of course John Reuben.

“Jamboree” apertura el álbum con un acompasado ritmo, hablándonos de las pericias de trabajar como músico a tiempo completo en dónde la expectativa, la humildad, el miedo y el orgullo son los protagonistas: “Wish it was as easy to keep the faith / willing to say God will make way / but it’s a dangerous place to get paid to motívate”. “In The Air” resuena con una melodía cautivadora y letras como: Something’s in the air tonight/ I was on the pone making plans, calling friends / Are you all alone when the world catches up? / It’ll be too late. Hey now look out”. “No Be Nah” es otra gran canción. Oh yeah take me away / Oh my pretty woman, perhaps maybe someday”.

Prologue - The World At Midnight

image

Artist: Prologue
Album: The World At Midnight
Year: 2008
Label: Mantis Group
Website: http://www.myspace.com/PrologueOC
Buy: iTunes - Amazon - Rhapsody

For fans of Hillsong United, Cartel, Leeland and Thrice, the California town brings us Prologue. Spirited and tuned rock with attractive and challenging lyrics, emphasizing the apathy that has consumed our generation leaving it with no goals and plague our minds with conform. What began with a simple desire to create music and thoughts of worship has flourished as a result giving a band of five members with a unique sound that culminates in the incendiary debut called “The World at Midnight”.

The album begins with “Days Pass By” mixing Ezell’s dazzling voice, guitars and the frantic sound of the drums that shouts: “Do you see it rushing through the trees? / It’s a call to get up on your feet / not stricken by my past defeats / they would only bring me to my knees / come on, let’s make haste /’re not guaranteed another day”. With an insurance acoustic guitar riff and a catchy tune, “It Was All For Me” reminds us of God’s sacrifice to save our lives. “Catching Z’s” has influences from High Flight Society, and not self-conscious to give an occasional aggressive cry awakening amid cries of meanness. Delivering a more subdued feeling, “No Reason to Fear” whispers to us in the chorus: “You are my hiding place, comfort of all this grace. / You are mine, I’m yours “, reminding the early Seventh Day Slumber. Likewise, “Ready To Save” qualifies the silence with a faster beat and remembrances Future Of Forestry, speaks of salvation in each paragraph. “Faults” shakes with adrenaline and a quirky melody in phrases like: “Save me / Jesus you’re the only one who can save me from the dark around me. / You will change me, Jesus You’re the only one who can know me from myself”. Relevant interpretation gives us “Wonderful” with influences from Creed and Nickelback, and a chilling composition of worship to our God, using successful pianos and acoustic guitars. “When Your Mind Clears” closed the recording, giving us a captivating and simple melody and its lyrics full of loneliness and forgiveness.

Brandon Ezell (guitar and vocals), Andrew Smith (drums), Conor Higgins (guitar), Matt Garcia (bass) and Derek Campanile (keyboards and programming) are Prologue. They speak about apathy, fear, failure and hope, demanding us to wake up from the state  of “comfort” in which we live. They’re currently working on a new project, which included a new version of “Catching Z’s” (curiously, they’ve added a 2.0 to the title), using synthesizers and an upgraded sound that I had the privilege of hearing. Undoubtedly, this 2010 will be a good year for Prologue, and as they say “this is just the beginning.”

Do you see it rushing through the trees? / It’s a call to get up on your feet / not stricken by my past defeats / they would only bring me to my knees / come on, let’s make haste / we’re not guaranteed another day”. Entregando un sentimiento más pausado, “No Reason To Fear” nos susurra en el coro: “You are my hiding place, comfort of all this grace. / You are mine, I’m yours”, recordándonos los inicios de Seventh Day Slumber. “Faults” estremece con su adrenalina  y extravagante melodía en frases como: “Save me /  Jesús you’re the only one who can save me from the dark around me. / You will change me, Jesus you’re the only one who can sabe me from myself”.

Danyew - Wake Up EP

image

Artist: Danyew
Album: Wake Up - EP
Year: 2009
Label: Sparrow Records
Website: http://www.myspace.com/danyew
Buy:
iTunes - Amazon

Audiences packing David Crowder Band shows were recently treated to the rising Christian artist Danyew. Instead of wandering away to the merch stands, concertgoers showered Danyew with appreciation for his thoughtful and orchestral rock, which recalls Coldplay, U2, and Radiohead. Built on a piano melody, Wake Up is a plea to be productive that’s big on atmosphere and wide in scope.” said iTunes. For those eager to hear more from this talented guy, he gives us almost at the end of the year a new EP entitled “Wake Up”. While there are only 3 songs, each of which possesses the perfection we expected.

The EP is a prelude by the song that shares its name, “Wake Up”. The instrumentation and atmosphere of this track is great: pianos, synthesizers, violins and endowed with beautiful melody. A letter addressed to those who lost the blessing of living in peace next to Jesus, and prefer to live on excuses, full of masks and invaded by the defeat. “Twilight” has a similar pattern of “The Closer We Are”, but this time enhances synthesizers and sound effects, giving more complicated melody and consolidating Danyew talent, because he is responsible for implementing most instruments. Finally, with a dance/pop beat we find “Silver Lining”. Accompanied by a piano and relentless sweep pads, without neglecting the “silver lining” of hope that cries out the dazzling lyrics of the song.

Influences of Mew, Phil Wickham and Muse with the personal touch of Danyew sound, makes this EP another good example of the versatility and skill of this genius. Ready for more songs?

image

Danyew - Danyew EP

image

Artist: Danyew
Album: Danyew - EP
Year: 2009
Label: Sparrow Records
Website: http://www.myspace.com/danyew
Buy: iTunes - Amazon

Music can take many different forms in a listener, affecting each one differently. Danyew’s music amplifies this feeling on listeners in their own way, as if speaking through a megaphone making even enhance the beauty of its essence. This EP (his debut at Sparrow Records) and Danyew unique gifts as a composer, artist and musician are heard clearly, both musically and lyrically. Coldplay, Copeland, Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol, Eisley, Frou Frou/Imogen Heap, Muse, Radiohead/Thom Yorke and Rufus Wainwright are just some of the influences on this record.

The brilliant performance of “The Closer We Are”, which uses torrential and resonant guitars and synthesizers atmosphere, open the EP. “He takes on our heart, we receive his throne / with eyes on the stars he waits for you”, declare us one of the beautiful lines of this song. “Streetlight” is performed by piano and a simply contagious melody, rising to reach the chorus and proclaim: “I saw you glowing like a streetlight and I fell in love just tryin’ to understand why you loved me first. / Your heart is all I ever want to know and I’ll go anywhere you want to go. / You’re shining bright. / You’re my streetlight”. The perfect contrast is given by “Close Your Eyes”, a song that uses rhodes, and penetrating electronic sounds similar to Radiohead, experimenting with a dark and almost mysterious beside whispers lyrics that shout us to never give up, close our eyes, free our minds and that we and God are all connected. Accompanied by an acoustic guitar and violin rains, “Beautiful King” (the first single that became known Danyew at radio stations) expressed devotion with a mixture of admiration and delight: “Every word that you say, wields the beauty of angels. / Every smile is arrayed with a joy like wedding bells. / It’s my heart you hold, I sing of our mystery. / I will stand and behold, my Beautiful King”. The energy and versatility is shared with “Nothing Without You” with a country folk sound very well produced and full of creativity, expressing total dependence on God. “Turnstile” is definitely the best song of this EP. Surrounded by a naïve, romantic and captivating feeling, using aspects of The Beatles, pianos, and an epic, majestic and dreamlike voice performance. It’s seductive in every way and speaks about love in phrases like: “I want you like the first time I saw you / Want you like a shooting star / Love, You are my home. Oh, I want you for my own. / I love you like there is no tomorrow / Love you through the joy or sorrow. / I want you more than you will ever know “.

Influenced of British sounds and all things creative: art, life, love, God and music; the end result giving inspiration, contemplation, set a mood and focus thinking. This EP is one of the best of 2009, and has a lot of skills in it. No doubt, Danyew have us in expectation with all that material not yet recorded, and the strength of these 6 tracks is perfect for a future test and ambitious project.

Number One Gun - To The Secrets And Knowledge

image

Artist: Number One Gun
Album: To The Secrets And Knowledge
Year: 2010
Label: Tooth & Nail
Website: http://www.myspace.com/numberonegun

After the transition that took Number One Gun through an uncharted territory, and Jeff Schneeweis positioning himself as a soloist, the band is ready to consolidate his career through this forthcoming project called “To the Secrets and Knowledge”, giving us a solid, creative and talented sound. Jeff took the role of full-time producer for the past two years including bands like Secret & Whisper, Hawthorn Heights, Esterlyn and Brighten from his most recent works. This spontaneous composition and recording process has resulted in an eclectic collection of songs with a relevant message: finding treasures hidden in each of us.

“The Victory” starts with an explosive synth and a compelling beat mixing guitars with one of the best performances of his vocals, talking about memories and regrets. While “Big Machines” registered once again the familiar punk/rock band sound, but this time using features of The Starting Line. It opens up the first official single from the album, “Forest” which written with his two-year-old daughter, thinking about what she will found when she begins school. Excitement, the fear of the unknown and the bigness of life are the feelings one has when starting a new adventure or charting a new territory. “I’ve gotta figure out why the world is so big / I’ve gone way way out way out of bounds / I’ll do anything, tell me how” sincerely declares the chorus of this song. “Noise” is definitely a track able to get your attention immediately and denotes a refreshing change to the band’s profile. On the other side, “Hey Stranger” highlights the musicality in each pulse, using as means to pianos, lead synths, guitars and lyrics full of mystery. Then we come to “The People” kicking off with an acoustic and slow arpeggio, which talks about the criticism from people when we started to make good decisions. With influences from Owl City (referring to electro-pop that gives us), we find “White Lies” with a clear message about the lies and excuses that we make to justify our delusions. “Look To Pass” continues with the quiet atmosphere with instrumental track that deserves the title which has been given. Almost completing the album, we met with “Try It” shouting the need to return to try and find reasons to achieve our goals, powerful guitars and a aggressive drum beat. Finally, “Don’t Stop Believing” (originally by The Journey) establishes the versatility of the project: pianos, retro sound and a contagious prayer to the people looking for happiness in their daily lives.

“I did this recording for my” shares Schneeweis. “I wanted to push myself musically and on the production side of things. Because I feel like I accomplished what I set out to do with this album, I’m open to seeing what the listeners will walk away with. I hope it inspires something within themselves”. This is only the beginning of a fresh and deep sound. “To The Secrets and Knowledge” releases on Tooth & Nail Records on January 26, 2010. Keep your ears open for this album.

Red Umbrella - Living And Surviving

image

Artist: Red Umbrella
Album: Living & Surviving
Year: 2009
Label: 7 Spin Music
Website: http://www.myspace.com/redumbrella

Originally from Canada and reminiscent British rock influences of 60 including some ELO, The Beatles to Death Cab for Cutie and Keane; bring an outbreak evolution of the traditional “classic rock”. Red Umbrella offers us his second release entitled “Living and Surviving” through 7 Spin Music (Inhabited, Hello Kelly, Playdough), combining engaging melodies with intelligent lyrics and resulting a significant and enjoyable musical experience. There arises a question that defines the message of the album: “Will you live or just survive?”

“Prison Side” is the story of a criminal who is ironically trial about himself: “Played his cards well, hit a land slide, called a losing game, bookie shouts your name, your pockets Pulled out, pay up just the same”. With an introduction of drums and ringing guitars, “Intervention” tells the abundance of indifference in our spiritual world into mediocrity. “Forest Fire” has many influences from Franz Ferdinand and asks: “Did you forget what you love?” emphasizing the eagerness that governs our daily lives and makes us forget the essence of life. Moreover, “Beckoning” has an undeniable rhythm, impossible to go unnoticed, using synthesizers and particular strident phrases. Masterful interpretation of “Boompop” reveals a great message about faith and setting priority in a consumerist lifestyle, and the disruption of Playdough in the middle of the song gives a Hip-Hop/Urban sound with features of Starflyer 59. Then we find “Living & Surviving” which has an electro-rock feel similar to The Killers’ Human, and asks for help in the middle of the bumpy road from loneliness and confusion. “Whisper All of Your Love” tells of how, when we look back, we can see the times that God was speaking softly, but can be hard to hear at the moment. Michaelis Dennis and Jeremy are the songwriters, guitarists and vocalists of the band; however the bass is highlighted in this song and gives the rock a slightly funky, almost danceable element when mixed with keyboards. There comes the turn of the cover “Turn! Turn! Turn!” (Originally by The Byrds), inspired by Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 and with an atmosphere of classic rock very well defined. “Crazy (All Of Me)” is a CS Lewis’ book poem entitled “Out of the Silent Planet”, leading the listeners directly to a story of captivity in space. It’s a strange song, but in good way mysterious. At the end of the list, we ran into “Babbling Brook”, an excellent introspective ballad that rumored provocative questions: What will be written in my book?” and “Did I give more than I took?”. The song makes us reflect on the legacy we leave when we leave this world and ends the album perfectly.

Invaded with Euro-pop and eager to talk about their beliefs, Red Umbrella said: “Some of our songs are somewhat ambiguous, but when someone asks the meaning of a song gives us the opportunity to explain our convictions and that makes our music worthwhile”. You can find aspects of Coldplay, U2 and The Beatles; completing the thousand reasons to enjoy this wonderful project.

Artist: The House
Album: The House
Year: 2008
Label: The House Music
Website: http://www.myspace.com/thehousemusic

The House brings us passionate Modern Rock and worship, through its self-titled debut called “The House”. Members of Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa (California) they had the opportunity to take their music throughout their nation. AJ Ogden (vocals, guitar), Brenes Beeler (percussion and drums), Drew Enterline (lead guitar) and Brandon Breitenbach (bass) inquire the purpose of God in their lives through their songs.

“Where You Are” is a song that expresses the need to be with God at all times, and there is no better place than His presence. Along with infectious guitars and catchy bass, “Let Your Glory Fall” is a prayer for revival, a cover very well played by these guys. Then “Filling My Heart” pours energy into every compass, asking God’s direction and fulfillment in our hearts. The melody of the chorus and the widest interpretation of AJ are simply amazing. “Falling On My Knees” is accompanied by acoustic guitars and a lyric of submission. Using sporadically Hammond’s, sweet pads, easily lead to an atmosphere of worship. “Forever” has influences from U2, Phil Wickham and Danyew, making this cover something interesting, worthy of play in your worship band. “Forever God is faithful, forever God is strong, Forever God is with us, forever” says the choir with conviction. Surprisingly, “Father of Love” qualifies the sound of the album, giving it a charming acoustic flavor and lines like: “I was lost but now I’m found, I was blind but now I see, from the death you rescue me, Father of Love”, definitely conquer us. “Lord You Have My Heart” starts with a delicate piano and a beautiful melody which seeks to bring praise to God, seeing his face and dropping his glory in our lives. With clear influences from David Crowder Band and Dashboard Confessional, the powerful “Nothing Can Silence Our Love” is a voice that cries out that there’s nothing that can blow out the joy we have in our hearts. “You Found Me” consolidates further the distinguished sound of The House, and gives us a poem of salvation, combining piano and acoustic guitars with a simple chorus: “Hold me closer and don’t let me go alone.” Finally we find “Rest in You”, perhaps the most profound song of the project, which adds some violin between his passionate melodies, and declares that while rest in God, we find grace in despair. God has restored our hearts and now there is no adversity that keeps us from his love, so we can rest in His love.

Our supreme desire is to bring people to the throne of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior” is the mission of The House, who create a unique sound, giving glory to God for what he has done in their lives and are excited by see how the Lord is opening doors and are being used by him for the purpose for which they were created.

“Forever God is faithful, forever God is strong, forever God is with us, forever”, declara con convicción el coro. Sorprendentemente, “Father Of Love” matiza el sonido del álbum, dándole un sabor acústico encantador y en líneas como “I was lost but now i’m found, I was blind but now I see, from the death you rescue me, Father of Love”, definitivamente nos conquistan.
